WHEN FRACTIONAL LEADERSHIP HELPS

A gap to fill. A change to lead.

You may need ongoing leadership, extra capacity for a demanding period or experienced support while you decide what the permanent role should become.

  • You need senior technology experience, but the role or budget does not justify a full-time CTO.
  • Technology decisions are reaching the founder or board without enough senior technical context.
  • A growing team needs clearer priorities, ownership and leadership.
  • You are between technology leaders or preparing to recruit your first CTO.
  • A rearchitecture, turnaround or acquisition needs focused technical direction.
  • Your existing technology lead needs senior support through a period of change.

THE RIGHT LEADERSHIP FOR THE SITUATION

A role shaped around your business.

We agree the outcomes, responsibilities and level of involvement before starting. The role can be broad or focused on a defined challenge.

Direction & priorities

Connect business goals with technology and product choices. Make the trade-offs visible and give the team a practical direction to work towards.

Leadership & decisions

Bring experienced judgement to architecture, investment, suppliers, risk and delivery. Give founders, executives and boards clear technical context.

Teams & ownership

Support technology leaders and teams, clarify responsibilities and improve how product, engineering and the wider business work together.

Delivery & change

Stay close to important work, unblock decisions and help turn plans into delivery without taking ownership away from the people doing the work.

Hiring & transition

Define the leadership or team capability you need, support recruitment and create a considered handover when a permanent appointment is made.

Stakeholder communication

Turn technical progress, constraints and risks into clear updates for leadership, investors or boards, with the detail needed to make decisions.

Availability, decision authority, named responsibilities and any urgent or out-of-hours expectations are agreed explicitly. Fractional support does not imply unlimited cover.

WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

Leadership that leaves you stronger.

The aim is not to create dependency. It is to improve decisions, build capability and help the business move forward with greater confidence.

  1. Experienced leadership at a proportionate cost.

Senior judgement across technology, product, teams and delivery, with the commitment matched to your needs rather than the cost of a full-time executive role.

  2. A supported, accountable team.

Clearer ownership and practical leadership for the people delivering the work, including coaching for existing technology leaders where useful.

  3. Progress through transition.

Important work keeps moving while you recruit, restructure or navigate a demanding change - with a planned handover rather than an abrupt exit.

HOW WE WORK

Agree the role. Stay close. Adapt.

Fractional leadership works best when expectations are explicit. We maintain regular contact, make the work visible and review the arrangement as your needs change.

  1. 01 / DEFINE

    Make the responsibility clear.

Understand the business, team and decisions ahead. Agree priorities, authority, availability, working rhythm, initial term and quote before starting.

  2. 02 / LEAD

    Work alongside your people.

Join the relevant leadership and delivery conversations, support decisions and help move agreed priorities forward with direct, regular contact.

  3. 03 / REVIEW

    Keep the support useful.

Review progress, risks and what the business needs next. Adjust the focus where agreed and prepare a clear transition when the engagement ends.

A FEW PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Before we start.

Is a fractional CTO the same as a consultant?

There can be overlap, but fractional leadership is usually more embedded and ongoing. We agree responsibility for particular decisions and outcomes, join the relevant working rhythm and stay involved as plans are carried through.

Can you work with our existing CTO or technology lead?

Yes. The role can add senior capacity, provide a trusted sounding board or lead a defined programme without displacing the person already responsible. We make the boundaries clear to the team.

Can you help while we recruit a permanent CTO?

Yes. We can stabilise priorities, help define the role, support the selection process and prepare a structured handover. Hiring decisions remain yours.

How much time do we need?

It depends on the responsibility and pace of change. We might agree regular days, a lighter advisory rhythm or concentrated support around a specific challenge. Availability and response expectations are documented rather than assumed.

Will you be hands-on?

Yes, within the agreed role. That can include shaping plans, reviewing architecture, supporting leaders, preparing board updates and unblocking delivery. It does not mean taking every technical decision away from your team.

How are fractional engagements priced?

We scope the initial responsibility, time commitment and review points first, then provide a clear quote. Because you pay for an agreed level of involvement rather than a full-time executive role, you can access extensive senior experience at a lower overall cost. A short initial term can help both sides confirm that the arrangement is useful before making a longer commitment.
